Nope, this is not ok. He doesnt have to destroy it, he can keep it in a portfolio. But there is no reason for it to be on display.

My mom is an artist and keeps ALL her pieces. Just because someone has an ex doesn’t mean they have to ERASE all proof cause your the new chick. I would rather he be able to be honest about his past instead of getting rid of things to appease my insecurities 🤷🏼‍♀️

It’s an object he made. It’s not a picture of them. Like for instance I have a mom necklace my ex gave me, when my daughter was born. I have never took it off. My husband knows. He has never asked me to get ride of it. Now if he gave me a personal item. Like something engraved, or memory gift, or a sweatshirt. That would be different. That’s how I look at this. If he’s an artist maybe he is proud of his work, or s reminder of how far he has come. If you live together, maybe you can asked for it to be put in a spare bedroom or something.

Being a current art student I can tell you that him keeping or having this piece hung up doesn’t mean he’s not over her or anything like that 😂 talk to him about the piece and ask him why it’s special to him because not all artists create art with the same purposes or functions. Passion is not the only thing that fuels art. 
If you are feeling he may still be hung up on his ex I can assure you that he’d be giving you more to worry about than his art piece. Has he done anything else to make you feel on edge about this piece or is it simply knowing she painted it?

I’d be fine with it as long as they’re not in contact. It’s his art and design! Past is the past, doesn’t matter anymore.

I used to draw and paint when I was younger so anyone who says it's just art uh no it's not. Art is made to make someone feel something and most of the time it's made out of passion. It's why I stopped bc I had no passion for art. I personally wouldn't be okay with it being a former artist myself and knowing how personal art pieces are to the artist. It sounds like they had a very deep connection to make a beautiful piece like that though

I drew/created so many pieces for my ex and I. I mean some pieces that took me months and I thought were gorgeous, hell my art professor saw one of them and wanted a copy for himself (was a woodland scene with two people resting beneath a tree, we were both very outdoorsy people). All that shit went in the trash when we broke up, but we also ended on horrible terms on his part. I honestly don't know how to handle the situation (none of my dudes have been that sentimental over those kind of things), but I wouldn't blame my ex's new girlfriend for being put off by one of my pieces hanging on his wall. Kinda weird to me 🤷

Art can be very personal and is part of a persons journey. Talk to him about it, and ask him why he wants it on display.  It may be the feeling he meant to convey in the painting is why he wants to keep it.
