My friends keep asking me when me and my "husband" are getting married. We got a Dominican marriage 🤣🤣🤣 everything's under both of our names, we got kids, we live together, I got a ring. Why does a paper have to say he's my husband?

Well an actual marriage provides you with protection. If you are not married and you break up you need to figure out splitting assets yourself. The court won’t assist because there is no divorce happening. Also if one of you is say in a coma your boyfriend won’t have any right to say when it comes to your medical care unless you have previously set up the correct paperwork. When one of you dies you need a will because your items will go through probate and a bf or gf is not in line to receive anything. Your children would be first followed by parents then siblings. So if you don’t want to be legally married make sure you have a will and power of attorney set up in case something happens to one of you.

In my opinion you don’t need it. It’s not you love him anymore if you were married. Or you would be more loyal or what not. I have 3 family met who are not married and have just been together for years and years. Unless your man wants it. You do what makes you happy!

Personally, I want to teach my children the importance of the sanctity of marriage. And I want to demonstrate to them what I teach them. 
And it’s true that he’s not your husband if you’re not married.

Technically he isn’t your husband.
However it doesn’t matter if it’s not important to you. He’s your partner & if you see marriage as a piece of paper you don’t believe in, don’t do it.
