Parental rights vs child’s best interest
What are some circumstances where you think a parent’s right to see their children should be taken away? Do you think supervised visitation is appropriate? Let’s assume the kids are under 10.
For example, should a parent have a right to visitation if they are in prison?
If they’re a registered sex offender?
If they have active drug/alcohol problems?
If they are in rehab?
If they are homeless?
If the kids were taken away due to neglect? Abuse?
If there’s a history of domestic violence?
If they have been gone for over a year? 5 years?
If they pour milk before cereal? 😱
A while back I was talking to a woman at a supervised visitation center that was there so her 3 year old could visit with her dad that had been convicted of molesting her. I was shocked that the court thought supervised visits were in the child’s best interest. And yes, the mom was a wreck.
I personally wouldn’t want to take my kids to a prison for visitation, but I think things like rehab and homelessness shouldn’t prevent kids from being able to visit their parents. I wouldn’t even want supervised visitation with an active addict though. I was just curious where that line would be for others.
