How do I go about contacting a lawyer?

I need a lawyer for a child support case between my abusive ex boyfriend. How would I go about doing it? He doesn’t even see his daughter and it’s not right for me to be struggling without any financial support. Do I have to pay a ton of money up front? How does this work? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

I don't know about your state but WI filed it free for me because I was getting assistance. Didn't need a lawyer to get everything started.

Go on google and search lawyers in your area. 
If your low income they usually offer legal help through the state/province depending where you live. 
Once you collect a bunch of lawyers names go back on google n put the lawyers names in and then put “reviews” you are going to want an “ aggressive” and “mature” lawyer 
Someone that’s been a lawyer for many years as you are dealing with abuse. 
 
After that call the lawyers you think suit you best and ask their fees etc. 
I’m in Canada but my lawyer for a abusive ex husband case for custody and divorce was free first meeting but then $4,000 up front for them to start the case. It’s expensive but if you can get legal help for lower income def try to go that way.

Maybe call lawyers offices in your area and ask about their fees and such? See if any do free consultations. 
I don't really know anything about it but that would be my suggestion.
