If they have a rash then yes. If not, then there's no reason to use it.

My doctor recommended using coconut oil (pure organic) in the red areas of the butt area for my newborn/late preemie. Doc says their skin are still very sensitive & coconut oil is a very natural way to treat it- it works, I love it and I use it for some parts of her dry skin too. I got mine from Sprouts.

Do they have a rash? You have only need to apply ointment if they have a rash or their bottom is looking red/raw.  I believe it is safe for a newborn. Changing their diaper right away EVERY time they are wet/poopy will help prevent the need for ointment.
