Is having an extravagant lawn environmentally unfriendly?

Could using lawns for growing crops rather than decorative plants be seen as the new “green” thing to do?

I mean if the lawn have real trees, bushes, and flowers. I don’t see how. 
When I have a lawn I do want real plant life and some type of crops.

I tend to agree that lawns arent environmentally friendly and I have thought about turning my lawn into both a botanical and a food garden before. We dont have an HOA so its something we would be free to do. But it also seems like a lot of work so i've put it on the maybe one day list

As someone who gardens and is learning about permaculture and creating a sustainable system at home, down with lawnmower culture!  It's a lot of work for little to no return. For similar work, I get flowers and fresh food and I know where it all came from. My neighbors donate their excess produce to food banks. I can and dry everything excess I can.

I like having a nice lawn 🤷🏼‍♀️ it's pretty, and I enjoy it. I also enjoy having trees, and my garden. It's never been hard to maintain, just set the sprinkler systems on for 10 minutes in the morning during dry weeks when there's no rain and mow it once a month and call it a day. People do a lot of wasteful things, such as showering daily, using plastic bags, not recycling, running water while they brush their teeth, leaving lights on, throwing away leftovers. If you're going to complain about people having a lawn, you better make sure you aren't doing anything wasteful either, or it's pretty much calling the pot calling the kettle black in my opinion

The more biodiversity in your yard the better! And please stop killing dandelions!!! Dandelions are an amazing “first food” for new bees. Wild or any type of flower feeds the bees too.
Our current lawn care expectations are not providing any food for them and we all know population of a species depends on the amount of food they can find. Bees can’t eat grass or non fruit eating trees/bushes.

I never saw the point of massive lawns. A good sized lawn is maybe 12-15 ft from street/sidewalk to front porch. Backyard, whatever you need space for. How much time do people REALLY spend in their front lawn when they’ve got a backyard? Especially when most houses are set up so that the the family room is close to the the backyard door so that when you’re in those areas you can keep an eye out out in the backyard.

I LOVE MOWING MY LAWN!!!! It is so satisfying and peaceful. I always mowed my parents lawn when I was younger, and I honestly miss doing yard work now that we travel for work.

Unless you’re wasting tons of water on it in a drought, who cares? There’s so much empty space in the US still lol I don’t think we’re exactly dying for more room for agriculture. If you grow a home garden tho good for you!!

I hate lawns and swathes of tidy grass...so much water. My FIL spends hours making sure his grass is better than his neighbors and mowing; it’s kind of pathetic...because his lawn still looks shabby compared to his neighbors. I wish he’d let my MIL expand the flower beds with native plants, but they have an HOA. 
My husband is finally starting to grasp that grass maintenance is a hassle and waste of energy. I got him a permaculture book this year, so I’m hoping he takes the hint and starts a more eco-friendly lawn.
