Filing taxes help?

Question

I don’t claim any dependents. 
I did get married this year. 
I made 35,000 this year. 
If I file “Married but separate” it says I owe 1700!!!?! Which seems crazy. I’ve never owed money. 
If I file “head of house hold” it says I owe $200?!
I don’t see how I can owe anything. I didn’t make a ton!? 
I need an adult.

It depends how much you paid in. What is your reasoning for filing married but separate? You lose quite a few credits with that.

Sounds like you didn't have enough withheld from your paychecks. It is important to review and update your tax forms yearly.

W2s and what not I can't tell you much,
But if you google USA tax brackets you will find your tax bracket would be 12%. So you have to pay around 4200 a year.  So, $350 a month. Does your W2 form show you payed at least 4200 federal taxes for the year? If not, that's why you owe.

It doesn’t matter how much you make, it matters how much you had withheld from your paychecks. People that get money back ultimately had too much money pulled from their paychecks and their tax liability was less than the amount withheld, so they get their own money back with the exception of a couple refundable tax credits like earned income or dependent children. Our accountant always says that if you have to pay $0 and you get a $0 refund then you are doing things right. It sounds like you didn’t have enough money taken out of your paycheck to cover your tax liability.  
I’m assuming your taking a standard deduction so there’s not much that is going to lower your liability besides for dependents, school interest.

Filing married jointly will give you the largest deduction, for most married people thats what makes the most sense unless you were making hundreds of thousands more. You dont have to file head of household, that would give you or your spouse more of an exemption throughout the yr so they would take less taxes out but that might mean you dont pay enough throughout the yr and you’ll have to owe.

Try filing jointly with an injured spouse. Then you get the credits but he won’t be penalized for your bankruptcy.

Use TurboTax. Filing jointly, always. You get more credits for that.
Some people may owe, but it depends on where you live, how many withholdings you had on your w4 when you got your job. And getting married will also change that too.

Thats weird it's my 1st year bring married and I filed head of house hold married filing separately and got back the maximum amount no pay back..but I have dependents...
