Labor process?

I'm 38 weeks, FTM and im curious if there's a labor process. Do you lose your mucus plug before you start to dialate? Does your water break first? What triggers contractions? Or is there no like, step by step process? .... lol just curious.

There’s no step by step process because every woman and every pregnancy is different. Some women’s water breaks, some don’t. Some women lose their mucus plug, some don’t. Some start having contractions, some don’t. It’s really all a big mystery as to how it’s going to go. For my first, my water broke out of nowhere and lost my mucus plug after that... then started having contractions.

Different for everyone. I've given birth twice and never saw my mucous plug at all. My first I went into labor on my own, my second was induced. I had to have my water broken by the dr both times. My first labor the broke it at 9 cm, my second was at 5 to progrogress my labor. My first spontaneous labor though was contractions that started all of a sudden in the middle of the night. I had no other warnings or signs.

I guess it just depends on each pregnancy. This is my first baby too. Due March. I’m 36 weeks and my doc told me last week that I’m already 3cm and 70% effaced. She said I could stay that way for a couple weeks. I’ve been having back pain and reallyyyyyyy bad cramps at night (been to l&d once because it scared me so bad) other than that I was told to wait until i feel contractions so bad that I can’t talk or breathe through them. Haven’t lost my mucus plug or anything yet 🤷🏽‍♀️  
I know if you read your hospitals website they will give you tips on when to be worried that you are in active labor.
