Engagement and baby

So my boyfriend and I have been together for 4.5 years. We are both 21. Am I crazy for wanting to get engaged and start trying for a family? Some times I get really depressed that all of my friends on Facebook are announcing they got engaged to their partner when they have been together for two years or so or others announcing that they are pregnant. He says we aren't financially ready for a baby when we both have great paying jobs and a place of our own. Also he says he doesn't have money to buy an engagement ring even though he has a credit card for a jewelry store. I guess it just bothers me that he would rather spend money on other things then moving forward in our relationship. Opinions?
