Conversion therapy, legal??
This topic came up with a fellow group of therapists. A new bill is looking to legalize use of conversion therapy. For those who are unaware of what conversion therapy is, it is therapy used typically on minors to "de-gay" them. Some forms used electroshock or other very harmful forms of therapy. It has been made illegal in most areas. However, this bill is arguing that it should be allowed in talk therapy because you cannot control free speech. Our argument against is that our code of ethics prevents it as it can be considered doing harm, and we are sworn to do no harm. Does disallowing conversion therapy infringe on a therapists right to free speech and freedom of practice? Should parents be allowed to force their child into therapy for it? Would it be different if the child requested it?
UPDATED: found an article on it and posted screen shots. And just to add I highly disagree with conversion therapy being legal in any form.
