To sweep or not to sweep.... 39w4d

Can’t seem to get off the fence about doing a sweep.

My doctor mentioned it last week saying we could do it this week since I am due Friday. I have talked to a few family and friends and I’m getting 50/50 for and against. Anyone have any input?

I turned it down at my 39 week (39+2) appointment because I didn’t want to mess with anything before my due date. My next appointment is Friday (40+2) and if I haven’t had the baby then I’m planning on getting swept. I’ll have to schedule an induction at that appointment, and I really don’t want to have pitocin, so I’m going to exhaust all other measures before going forward with that which means a membrane sweep is probably the first step.

Same here! I’m currently 20+2 and have an apt on Thursday. If I’m not in labor by then they’ll have me scheduled to be induced at the following week but I also really want to avoid Pitocin. So if he’s offering the sweet I’ll get it although I didn’t really want to do that either

They don’t want me going much further than 41 weeks, so I’m in the same boat! I haven’t been dilated or effaced at all yet so I’m getting nervous

I'm doing mine Wednesday, I went overdue with my last and was miserable. I'm not worried. If worst case scenario my water breaks I know my body will respond with contractions quickly. My 1st kiddo from water breaking til birth was an hourMy second kid from water breaking was 45 minutesHoping this baby follows suit.I have pretty fast deliveries and don't really get contractions until my water breaks. So here's hoping it works for me.Good luck with which ever you choose!

I had it done with my first son at 39 weeks. At 39+4 (with the help of intimate time the night before) my water broke at 2am and my son was born 14 hours later. Your doctor should tell you that it could have an affect immediately, be a couple days or do nothing at all. It’s a toss up. Totally up to you if you’re ready to help get the process going. Good luck!

I had it done last Thursday and nothing has happened for me and I was at about 2cm and at least 50% effaced so it’s kind of a toss up.

My midwife offered a sweep at my next appointment (39 weeks, 3 days) if my cervix is favorable. I’ll probably take him up on it.

It’s not guaranteed to work but it also isn’t really gonna hurt anything. The biggest risk of doing a sweep is that it could potentially break your water, which would necessitate medical induction if contractions didn’t start. But the evidence is decent that it can prevent medical inductions for a baby that’s really taking their time (41+ weeks).
