Getting engaged in a long distance relationship?
My bf and I have been dating long distance for about 3 years through college school years, and getting to spend our summers in the same city. We are going strong and are super in love and committed, and know we want to spend our lives together if possible. However, it's looking like after graduation, we may be even further apart if I am not able to get into a grad school that is near the job he has already secured across the country.
He has told me that his mom actually suggested that we get engaged this summer (after he graduates) or next summer (after I graduate). It could help with staying commited to each other and staying hopeful through the across the country long distance relationship, which could end up lasting years. He seems to agree with/ be open to the idea, but of course is discussing it with me and it is something we can figure out together. His mom absolutely adores me, so I know she just wants the best for us, but I still have a few concerns.
I feel like we should not be getting engaged until we have had the chance to truly live with each other for awhile. We are super close, but I doubt we have the level of closeness required for engagement due to long distance limiting the amount of time we actually get to spend with each other. Also, we are both only 21 years old, which I personally feel is too young to get engaged.
But I do know I would like to get engaged to him eventually, and I do see the logic behind the idea of doing it soon.
So, that was a lot and thanks for reading. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the situation, or similar experiences?
Thanks!
