ADVICE! What do new borns REALLY need? -First time Mom 💙

I am 17 weeks with my first baby. I am happy and excited but I don’t want my excitement to take over and start buying random stuff that I really won’t need or won’t use much. Since new borns grow so fast, what should I start purchasing now? (I started buying diapers but what size should I mainly focus on since I’m having a baby shower) Also, when I do my baby registry, what are some important things to suggest to everyone without giving away the gender? (The gender will be revealed at the baby shower)

Somewhere to sleep, clothes, and some way to eat if you aren’t breast feeding 24/7 and a baby first aid kit and a car seat or travel system and some way to keep their bottom clean and dry. You can also get swing and bouncers and bathtubs and a million clothes but that’s all really for convenience of option for you as a parent but babies really only need a few things. You can find a lot of things on marketplaces or yard sales and some will come from family if you have people who can help you out. I watched minimalist baby videos on YouTube not because I normally live that way but because we are on a budget and live in a 2 bedroom apartment base housing so I figured they would know how to keep it simple.

Variety of bottles - thankfully you can get samples. Variety of clothing sizes. I put mine up to 18 months. Know that babies grow faster than their sizes. So a baby can be 3 months, but wearing 6 months clothes. That kind of thing. 
I agree with the other mom - look up minimalist nurseries. Don’t buy into the “it’s cute” vibe and add a million things -or the my friend loves it so I need it like the Dock a Tot or Rock and Play Sleeper - they are not safe per doctors. 
My registry has 120 items - 8 clothing items, 4 diaper sizes, wipes, 2 sets of bottles, swaddles, sleep sacks (look up Little Z’s Sleep Consultant on FB or Instagram), add in a swing, pack and play, etc unless someone is doing hand me down. 
Bath items, including toys for older age (12-18 mo), try to borrow a baby tub since they don’t use it long, we added 8 books, and the diapering creams (small variety), butt brush for cream, and maybe 2 cute items like girl head bands and pretty swaddles. It’s all very practical stuff since we have a small home. 
Weird items you could add - sink extenders for washing toddlers hands, tub mat so toddler doesn’t slip, and step stools for toddlers to reach sinks.

I use Aquafor for everything.  Helped with diaper rash when he had it like twice.  An electric auto rock and play is a lifesaver (seriously... you NEED this).  Receiving blankets.  Monitor. Noise maker.  Bath tub. Bottle brush (or 2- we keep one in diaper bag).  Some kind of drying rack for bottles.  
What we didn't use- wipe warmer, little hats, swaddles, bassinet, baby shoes, diaper creams, hanging carseat toys.
Be careful with purchasing bottles.  Baby will decide which he likes so don't go overboard on buying them until he/she is here. 
Be careful with soaps and lotions.  You'll get a ton at your baby shower.  My kid is almost 1.5 and I still have the soaps/lotions from mine because he has very sensitive skin so I have to be careful with what I use.  He couldn't use Johnsons for a long time. 
Don't go overboard on newborn diapers or clothing.  They grow into 0-3 months SOOO fast!

Dont underestimate the amount or burp cloths and blankets you'll need. Most of my list consist in packs of them. 
Both drooling bibs and feeding bibs, feeding being silicone and cloth for drool.
Butt paste for rash.
If BF, Nursing bras, tops and nipple shield and lanolin. 
Camilla teething drops.
Fridababy nasal aspirator.
Knowing how dirty and poopy clothes can get, I asked for a 4 pack of oxiclean detergent 🤷🏽‍♀️

I don’t have a lot to add, but what I thought I wouldn’t need for my first but could honestly even use now that she’s 1 is a wipes warmer! I will be purchasing one soon.

I'm not having an official shower because everyone is too spread out around the country. I ended up buying all the basics for clothes already (couldn't help myself). I probably have a more minimal list than most none the less (diapers/wipes, car seat, stroller, bassinet, hangers, hats/gloves/socks, night light, washcloths/towel, diaper bag, monitor, a few teething items). I was thinking we really only need the basics to get through and can ask for more during Christmas.

Pack n play with bassinet 
Button up pajamas (she wore these for MONTHS)
Swing
Pacifier 
Bottles (we used dr Browns for bottle and paci and loved them)
Blankets
Changing table
Burp cloths
Buy TONS of wipes (I didn’t get any as gifts) 
Nasal aspirator
Car seat/stroller system
Diaper genie
Sling if you want to carry baby
Don’t buy a baby bath tub. Waste of money. We bathed her in the kitchen sink. 
There are plenty of gender neutral clothes you could register for but honestly people will buy you whatever clothes they feel like because that’s just how they do.

Baby Tylenol, and other infant meds, baby toothbrush, brush and nail clipper set, nursing cover, high chair ( I suggest one that will work for a while or can be used as a booster eventually) baby wipes ( you can never have to many of these!) nose frida, baby spoons, socks, shampoo and lotion, baby safe detergent, bottle drying rack. 
I will say be careful about sticking up on diapers. My son was to big to ever fit into newborn size and had an allergy to a couple of different brands. Keep the receipt if you plan to stock up on these.

Not sure if someone already mentioned it, but mattress pad covers.  Also I agree with zipper sleepers for bed time, so much easier.  And last a portable diaper change clutch.
