I need advice 😔

An ex of mine & I split a few years back. We remained good friends for awhile. We stopped talking eventually due to us both meeting people and starting families. We both now have beautiful children & single. Would it be completely out of line for me to message him just asking how him and the family are? Should I just leave it?
