Blatant ignorance as a marketing ploy. Vs “canceled culture” Thoughts?

To keep this as generic as possible To fit into CC rules I’m using the word “ignorance” as an umbrella term for (racism, sexism, phobia, insensitive content etc)

Lately I have been noticing a lot of companies using “outrage” as a way of gaining notoriety. We see it with artist for album sales (fake fights, questionable album covers etc), we see it in fashion rather it’s cultural appropriation, racism, sexism, transphobia etc. I mean the list goes on. Only for those same offending companies to issue a “seemingly weak” disingenuous apology after 1000s if not millions of people made them a trending topic.

In today’s society, these major brands still gain revenue regardless of the outrage you see on social media. Which leaves me to believe that “outrage” has become the new marketing ploy, and is “cancelling culture” as effective as what we want it to be?

Example:

I’ve seen people going out of their way to destroy items they have bought from companies if efforts to show solidarity in “cancelling” them but at the end of the day, the company still gained revenue in the purchase. In some cases people just purchasing the item only to go viral for destroying it.

Or Katy perry for example, people cancelled her multiple times for her cultural appropriation and now she’s getting cancelled again for her “BLACK FACE SHOE “

Thoughts? (I really hope I made sense, I was trying to keep it as generic as possible)
