Kind of a rant post- My mom, sister and MIL are throwing me a baby shower and my mom told me today that my sister is talking with vegan caterers for my shower which I’m stoked about! But for the cake she mentioned a popular, family favorite bakery that makes gorgeous cakes but I’m pretty positive doesn’t make vegan options. She told me she still wants to get one regardless- because I guess it’s not a baby shower if you don’t have a ridiculously cute cake. When I voiced my qualm with it she literally told me that I can take pictures with the cake that everyone else can eat and would throw a vegan cupcake or two my way to have. Like- who the hell is this shindig for again? I’m 26 weeks and am having an amazing vegan pregnancy so far and this lifestyle is a passion of mine and is of great importance to me. I don’t mean to come off as ungrateful but I think it’s really crappy to serve something that represents everything I hate. Celebrating motherhood with a cake that was made from an innocent but miserable animal that had their motherhood stripped away from them? A cake loaded with extra hormones that I don’t need? To have to watch close family and friends consume it and put a pretend smile on my face like it doesn’t bother me? I actually told her “You really can’t go a few hours in your day without consuming an animal product?” I’m not being overdramatic, am I? I just feel my interests are being disregarded, and frankly disrespected.
