Endometrial biopsy experience
I had an endometrial biopsy today. Just wanted to share my experience because when I searched for others experience on here it was hard to find any.
My doctor had me take a Valium before hand. When I got to the office the nurse had me give a urine sample so they could run a urine pregnancy test. It was protocol even though thanks to my testing we knew there was no chance I was. Then they again explained the procedure and we signed the consents.
I’ll admit I was scared and afraid of how bad it was going to hurt. Basically they inserted a speculum. Cleaned my cervix with something then coated it with vinegar. The vinegar was to “light up” and abnormal cells. They found 1 tiny spot. My doctor used a tiny stiff brush to biopsy that spot. It stung but wasn’t bad. Maybe a 2-3 on pain scale. Then it was time for the cervical canal biopsy. Which was basically a stiff pipe cleaner brush the inserted and twisted in my cervical canal. That did hurt. It was a sharp stinging burning pain that caused my uterus to immediately cramp on top of the stinging burning pain. Luckily due to me not having had kids yet my cervix was firm enough he didn’t need the clamp to hold it in place. I don’t know nor want to know how bad that would have been. Lastly and very quickly he pulled the pipe cleaner out and in inserted another brush thingy all the way through into my uterus where he brushed all around to obtain the endometrial tissue for the endometrial biopsy. OMG I felt like my uterus was on fire. I just kept repeatingly saying “oh shit! Oh shit! God help me oh shit!” Luckily my OB is a compassionate man with a sense of humor because he said immediately jumped in and said “it’s alright we’ll say it with it you!” And him and his nurse joined me in my shit mantras. Then it was done. He watched my cervix for about 2 minutes to see if the bleeding was going to be bad enough to require some iron binding agent they had at the ready. I didnt. He reassured me that I did unexpectedly well even though I cussed. He said there’s no good way to get through that part when you haven’t had kids and if he could insurance to pay for conscious sedation he would. He said lay still for about another 5 minutes while he stepped out to get me a script ready for one dose of pain meds and he would be back to remove the speculum. He just wanted to double check that my bleeding had slowed before he removed it. The nurse kept me company and in less then 5 minutes when he returned other then a dull ache my pain was gone. My bleeding was slowing so he removed everything and I was given wipes and a panty liner.
All in all it went better then I expected. In the hours since I’ve had random cramping and minor bleeding but nothing a panty liner and heating pad can’t handle. I’ll be saving my one pain pill as of right now.
I should get my results on Monday.
I hope this detailed post can help another woman be prepared for what to expect.
