Generally a verbal warning or redirection, time out or time in when needed. Never spanking. Practicing consistent rules works well for us, especially with plenty of reinforcing positive behavior.

When they are little we calmly explain what they did was wrong and redirect.. We also give a cookie for good behavior.. Our daughter is 2.5 if she picks up all her toys and eats (most) her food she gets a cookie.. If she throws a fit after we've tried redirecting, which is hardly ever, we just remove her from the table or wherever we are and sit her on the couch kind of like on time out i guess.. She usually sits there for a couple minutes and calms down quickly... 
For our older kids.. We have a chart.. They get strikes when they break the rules.. We allow them to get rid of 1 strike on Sundays IF they behave all day (Sundays are their worst days for some odd reason) and we renew the chart every month.. We told them they are goimg away to boot camp if they get 3 strikes.. It has worked like a charm! They are terrified of going away 😂😂😂 they are 8 & 11.. They have behaved sooo much better since we started the chart!
We also punish them for the day or they get grounded depending on what rule they broke though.. No xbox/wifi.. No tv.. No going outside.. The usual
