Your senior year of college is fine. The fall is the safest bet, but it's different for every college. I was able to apply to mine in the winter but they closed registration in June, so I had plenty of time. 
You can do early registration, but usually that means you're committing to that college for sure if they admit you.

You can do research your sophomore year and visit your junior year but you should apply before Christmas break of your senior year because a lot of deadlines close in January and February. Some schools have rolling admission so it doesn’t matter as long as you apply by that summer or spring. You don’t wanna wait that long though. You should be choosing from your acceptances by the spring

It depends, if you wanna go to community college first I strongly reccomend taking a class at a time in high school, if you can manage to juggle it. When I was a freshman in high school I started going to our junior college and it's one of the best decisions I ever made. Other than that I'd start looking into what college you might wanna go to as soon as your freshman year, but most people wait until they're seniors. It's no pressure but the sooner you know the better, it gives you a chance to understand their qualifications, possible scholarship opportunities if you play sports or any other extra curriculars and you could tour the schools.
