How long would you date someone before it is “safe” to pop the question?

Depends. My hubby and I didn’t get engaged until after 9 years together and didn’t get married until our 14th anniversary. Been together for 22 years now. We weren’t ready for marriage when we were in 20s and we both wanted to finish college before we did.

My husband and I dated and lived together for a little over 5 years before he proposed. We had talked about it plenty but like another commenter said, he and I were in our very early 20s (20 and 21) when we got together so we had some growing up and learning about each other to do first. But I’ll be honest, by about year 4 I was starting to feel anxious. I started to worry that if he didn’t propose “soon enough” I’d have wasted a lot of time investing in someone who didn’t want me as their wife. I’m Catholic so once we moved in together I was really practicing to be a wife and not a girlfriend. But needless to say, we’re married now and expecting a baby so! Everything happens in the right time. ☺️

I wasn’t going to wait more then 2 years to be engaged. My husband knew this and if we didn’t match up on our life timelines then it wouldn’t have worked. We met online and he popped the question 2 years exactly to the day we met in person. I personally didn’t want to wait a long time because for me personally I wanted to be married, move in together and then start having children. The couple needs to be on the same page- 1 can’t be ready for marriage while the other sees themselves single for years. As long as the timelines match up(doesn’t have to be exact) then it’s what’s good for them

At least 1 year but even that seems pretty quick for me personally.

That is something each person has to decide for themselves. I told my husband on our first date I wouldn’t date anyone more than a year without marriage and engagement being in the very near future. I was 30 at the time and wanted children (34 now and still trying for our first) and on the year of our relationship anniversary he popped the question. I don’t believe in waiting around forever or having it not be discussed. Always ask for what you want

I have friends who asked after 3 months of knowing each other. 
My BF and I have been together 5 years in May. Haven’t really thought about it.
