Sugar pill

Currently I’m on birth control (the pill) I have the 28 day pill with the sugar pills being the week my period is supposed to come. I have an important event coming up soon and I know this is weird but I do not want to be on my period for this event. My best friend told me if I skip my sugar pills I won’t come on. Has anyone heard this? Is it safe to skip the sugar pill? And when would I start the next pack if that’s okay to do?
