career as a RN nurse?

been in my mind heavy lately about maybe looking into becoming a nurse. what are the steps to becoming a registered nurse? how many years will it take? what kind of schooling?
btw i have no college degree,  just my high school diploma

I got my LPN first and then bridged over. I was able to work as a nurse while completing my pre-reqs and RN program. Community college all the way! Save your money and don’t go to a private school. They charge way too much for inferior education (in my opinion). Once you have your RN you can go to school online for your BSN and MSN if you want.

You need to get your general education classes out of the way in order to apply at most schools. Nursing is very competitive so you definitely need those classes in order to get in. Placement testing during college is important. The general education classes are basically getting your associates degree. For me it was com classes, biology, microbiology, human anatomy 1 & 2, sociology, one math course, psychology, and a humanities class. Make sure to get a good grade in all of those classes because it matters! Then you can start applying. Some schools offer programs where you can get a bsn in 2 years but it’s an accelerated course so there’s more work involved within those 2 years instead of doing the 4 years. Good luck!

If you have never gone to college, it’s a long road. I’m working into being a RN and so far I’ve been out of high school for three years and have done about 4-6 semesters of general Ed and started my pre-reqs. You need a lot of classes worth about 2-3 years before you can even start the program. Then it’s 2-4 years of nursing school. Hospitals are now looking for a four year degree instead of 2, not all but a lot. But in the long run, it’s worth it and an amazing career if you’re really into medicine and helping people. I’ve taken a long break from school but hoping to get to it and finishing up my pre-reqs. Really think about it! ((:

If you don’t have any degree at all, then pre requisites take approximately 2 years. Then you have another 2 years of nursing school. The pre requisite classes were harder than nursing school (I did a one year accelerated bachelors program).

Path depends on what you already have (if anything) and what you want. There is an associate degree (ADN) or bachelors degree (BSN). If you already have a bachelors in something else, you may be able to go through a fast track. If not, you will need to decide which degree you want, ADN or BSN. ADN will get you a degree and a license, but you will likely need a BSN at some point in your career. I started with ADN. You have to chose a school and first take all the prerequisite courses. Once you have those, you will apply for the program itself. This may be just on grades, could include a test and/or interview as well. Get through the program and get your degree. Once you have the degree, you can then sit for the NCLEX exam, which you have to pass to get a license.
