What determines a baby's birth weight?

This might be a dumb question but I was just wondering if birth weight is genetic or what are the factors that go into it. My first son was 8lbs 10oz and me and my husband were only 6lb babies.

It’s a mystery really. Of course the nutrition and health of the mother plays a big role but overall they really don’t know. I’m a super thin woman and my husband and I were 8 pound babies. No one in our families have had babies bigger than 8.5 pounds. We had a 10.2 pound/23 inch long baby. He was huge! It’s still shocking to us and the doctors have no explanation. (I am due in July with another baby and terrified because most of the time your first is your smallest lol). Oh also, at 41 weeks went I went into labor I looked 6 months along. It was just so shocking to have such a big baby come out. Lol
