PCOS and Overeating

Natalie

Does anyone else with PCOS feel the need to snack throughout the day, even though they already eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner? And do you (half-jokingly) define "a light snack" as, say, most of a box of mac and cheese or most of a pizza?

I'm asking these questions because I'm prone to this behavior myself and want to know how others with PCOS deal with it. One of my coworkers (who has an appetite like mine, mind you, so he's being friendly with his teasing) has already taken to calling me "The Vulture," and I'll respond with, "Yes, I'm a seagull in a world full of French fries!"

(As to why this happens, I was looking up "pcos hangry" in my free time and found something interesting.

Apparently, the bodies of women with PCOS are much more sensitive to carbohydrates than those of women without PCOS. If a woman has both PCOS and insulin resistance, then, after a carb-heavy meal, the parts of her brain that deal with wanting food become hyperactive. Because of that hyperactivity, she'll want to eat more high-calorie foods right away. In other words, insulin resistance messes with the brain's ability to respond to food cues, which--for me--goes a long way in explaining why PCOS heightens my risk for Type 2 diabetes.
