Postpartum weight loss

So I gained 40 pounds during my pregnancy. I’m almost 4 weeks postpartum and during the first week I lost 20 pounds. I have been at a stall for 3 weeks now - no weight loss whatsoever. Does that mean I gained an extra 20 pounds of fat? I started running at 2 weeks postpartum and began resistance training this week and so far I’ve gained 2 pounds...what’s going on?

By the way I’m exclusively pumping.

Well first of all training may make you “gain weight” ON THE SCALE. But you are loosing fat; gaining muscle. And muscle weighs more than fat. Don’t think about the scale. Trust me i know it’s hard. But keep on working out, eating clean; and give yourself a break mama. Indulge in some ice cream or a glass of wine, after a long day and night of taking care of a newborn. You are doing great!! Even getting to the gym or doing an at home workout is great!!! That’s what gets me through my 40 lb weight gain From pregnancy and I think I’m 25 lbs down 6 weeks pp.

Trust me I get that. I have an awful digestive system and metabolism. I am not happy with my postpartum body more days than not... but i just have to think positive and get through the days

It’s hard when so many women lose the weight by just breastfeeding and then there are those of us that have to work our butts off to just lose a pound.

This has been me as well! Gained about 45. Immediately lost about 25 and stalled out for weeks now despite eating well, being dairy free, exercising and EBF. What the heck?!

I gained 35 and lost like 12. I lost 2lbs after a csection with a 7lb 10oz baby! (Lots of swelling). My milk dried up so now I’m intermittent fasting. I’m so dang fat at almost 2 months PP and I hate it.

I’m in the same boat. My baby is one month old today. I ended my pregnancy at 193, started at 150. I was 169 on the scale yesterday. This is baby #4 for me and I always gain about 40 pounds with each pregnancy. From experience I can tell you by 6-8 weeks pp I usually have about 10-15 pounds left to lose. By 6-7 months pp I’m usually back at my normal weight. It just takes time for the last few pesky pounds to come off. Keep doing what you’re doing and be patient with yourself.

All that quick weight loss in the beginning makes it feel like the whole process will be fast , but it slows down and that’s totally normal! I need to remind myself the same thing. It’s super frustrating, but the weight WILL come off, don’t worry! It might be as little as a pound a week so it won’t be noticeable for a while. Just be patient with yourself and enjoy your baby in the meantime 💕 Sounds like you’re living a healthy lifestyle, which is the best thing to do!

Drink lots of water and I mean lots and lots. When breastfeeding it's easy to get dehydrated, if you're dehydrated your body will start to retain fluid, which will add water weight, sometimes alot of water weight (5-10lbs worth). Make sure you are eating regularly too, it seems counter productive but DON'T restrict your calories. Your body needs lots of energy when breastfeeding, if you restrict your calories too much your body will go into "starvation" mode and will start to store more fat to use as energy, just make sure you're getting 80% of your calories from healthy foods and only about 20% from "treats". Also, not everything you gained during pregnancy goes away right away, your extra breast tissue is still there, plus the weight of the milk your body is making to feed baby (that could be 5 extra lbs right there). Your body may have also stored some extra fat but don't get discouraged by the scale, every body reacts to pregnancy differently. My body shape has changed significantly since having my second baby in less than two years even though my weight hasn't.
