Mackenzie Copper is born
I posted a newspaper article a couple weeks ago about my little bundles entrance into the world, but have now realized it is unreadable. Soooo, here’s her story. :)
**a little background info. I had an extremely posterior uterus and was told I would have really bad back labor (which was the case with my son), if it was in the front it was Braxton Hicks and not to go in. Also, I live 45 min away from the hospital I was going to deliver at....
I woke up the morning of Jan 17th at like 3:30 and had my first bit of bloody show. I was having front only contractions, and they were still 15-20 min apart so I wasn’t concerned. My hubby woke up for work 2 hours later and I told him I was pretty sure the baby was coming that day. I had some more bloody show around 8:30 and called the doctors office to see if I needed to head down to the hospital since that never happened with my son. They said I could if I was concerned but really not to leave my house until contractions 5 min apart. I played with my 3yo, scrubbed all the floors, did 4 loads of laundry, scrubbed the bathroom top to bottom, and did dishes all before nap time. By this time my contractions were 10ish minutes apart and still only in the front and I tried to take a nap to see if they would slow down, no such luck. I made lunch around 1:30 and called my husband to let him know my contractions are progressing and I would call his mom to pick me and the kiddo up after she gets off work to take me to the hospital to get checked and maybe admitted for the night. By this time, my contractions were getting stronger and I had a hard time continuing activity. I decided to take a shower around 2:45, again, to see if they would slow down or calm down. No such luck, they actually got stronger. I called my MIL and she was at the house by 4pm. She loaded the car chair while I filled my water bottle, grabbed a snack for my son, and let the dog back in the house. I had 2 contractions in those 10 minutes and another one getting in the truck. They were still in the front only so I wasn’t concerned about them. I honestly thought I was being a whimp! We get about halfway over the first mountain pass and I can’t sit on my bottom anymore and I turn around in the seat so I’m on my knees. My MIL pulls over and says “Jace your contractions are less than 3 min apart, what if we try for the other hospital or maybe the urgent care?” I told her whatever she felt she needed to do, just make sure my husband knows. My son keeps telling me “ mommy, sister make your tummy hurting? Drink some water, it make you feel better.” He was making me smile through my contractions and I was trying not to scare him by grunting lol. We picked up my FIL at the bottom of the mountain pass and by then my contractions were less than 2 min apart. My MIL ran the only stop light and pulled into the urgent care ambulance bay at the base of Copper Mountain Ski Resort. She ran in the emergency entrance and yelled “were having a baby, can you help me?” The RN in there says “we’re closed and we don’t deliver babies here.” My MIL says “ The baby is coming now, are you going to help?” Before I know it, 5 or 6 people are rushing out to get me out of the truck I was already climbing out of. My MIL says they are bringing a wheelchair but I can’t sit. She started crying and telling me I was so brave and so strong and was such a beautiful woman. It hit me then that my husband wasn’t going to make it to the birth of his daughter. I had one contraction walking into the clinic. And another as I got the the bed they directed me to as they turned on the lights. The doctor was yelling at me to lay down so she could check me and I just could not, so I climbed up on my hands and knees and had another contraction as the emt put an iv in! My MIL and the doctor pulled my pants to my knees and my water broke. The doctor checked me real quick and said she felt the head. I had another contraction and I said I was pushing, I pushed for about 20 seconds and she was all the way out!! ONE FRIGGING PUSH!! 5lbs 7oz and 17 1/4” of perfection! She was born at 4:44 pm. 44 minutes after my MIL arrived at my house and 3 minutes after arriving at the urgent care! if my MIL hadn’t made that decision, she would have delivered this baby on the side of the road in her new truck.
It doesn’t end there, the clinic is only a ski clinic so they didn’t have anything for a baby. They didn’t have a clamp for her cord, or a diaper, or a hat, or pitocin for my to prevent hemorrhaging. The fire truck that got there right after the birth had a clamp and a size 3 diaper. Since they had a clamp my MIL was able to cut the cord! It was the least I could do after all she did. An ambulance was called right away to take us to the hospital where my husband was eagerly waiting to meet his daughter. She rode skin to skin and fed like a champ right away!
Mackenzie Copper Vincent was named after the mountain she was born on and is one of 8% of babies who does not require oxygen about 8,000 feet. We live at 10,200 feet.
