D & C with other kids around?

Question

Monday I will be having a D & C under general anesthesia for a blighted ovum. I have a 3.5 year old and 7 year old. I am trying to come up with an excuse for Mommy to be having surgery at the hospital so that they understand why I was at the hospital and why I’m not “myself” What have some of you told your children?

We told our son the first time I was pregnant last year and that the baby didn't make it and that I had to have surgery. He was 5 at the time. I just had a D&C yesterday but we never told him about this pregnancy. I just told him he was going to grandma's after school because I had to have minor surgery and I would be home later. He never got upset about both surgeries.

We have a 7 year old as well. Ive had 3 losses and needed D&Cs for all three. The first time I was in the ER all night. I went in for a D&C at around 1am in the hospital. We told him what happened but did not tell him about that part. He was a champ and tried to look at the positive side. He said his baby went back to heaven and became an angel but that he knew the baby would come back. The second time, I went to the hospital again but I didnt get the D&C until 2 days later. We didnt tell him until everything was set and done. He cried for an hour. He was so hurt, it broke whatever was left of my heart. The third time we decided never to tell him. We didnt want him to hurt again. He did tell me multiple times he thought I was pregnant because my tummy was growing. The two times he knows about we told him mommy's body has to heal and that I didnt feel good. I tried to control my emotions but he caught me crying a few times. I was just honest with him and told him I was really sad we couldnt have a baby and that he couldnt be a big brother. This last time, I just told him mommy was sick. Sometimes it is better not to give them details as it affects them more than we think. It is important to give them an idea of what is going on but I wouldnt go into details. Be prepared for your children to tell their friends and teachers or other adults. Mine does. He says it so matter of factly. He tells them he wishes he could have a baby brother or sister on earth because his babies are in heaven because they came out before it was time.

I had a 3 year old and didn’t tell him anything. He spent the night with grandma the night before and she took him to daycare while I headed to the hospital. I felt fine afterwards, a little tired but he didn’t notice anything different.

I told my 7 year old that I was sick. I didn’t go into detail at all. They don’t need to know what happened or that it was surgery if you don’t want to go into detail with them.
