Night weaning 18 month old way easier than expected!

Rose

I don't normally post on here but I thought this might be helpful and encouraging to some other mum's in my position.

So, I have nursed my daughter to sleep and back to sleep for naps and night since birth. I had no problem with it until she was a little over a year old when I started to want to be able to just have a full night's sleep again. I researched about night weaning and every idea sounded incredibly stupid to me: as in...oh no you don't understand my child, that will never work lol.

Then at 15.5 months postpartum I found out I was expecting again and I realized that I am going to have to do something in the next few months before the new baby is here. And by 17.5 months I decided I am over night nursing let's just do this.

Well, I am quite opposed to cry it out yet I didn't want a super slow drawn out process so I had to come up with a middle ground game plan.

So for the first two weeks I slightly changed the bedtime routine: instead of teeth, potty, pyjamas, story, nurse to sleep... I did teeth, potty, pyjamas, nurse, story, lay in the dark with Mama for 5 mins, then nurse to sleep. During this two weeks both during the day and during bedtime I began telling her that soon milk is going to go bye bye at night time. That 5 mins of lay in the dark with Mama usually involved alot of crying but it was just a short time and I was right there telling her there would be milk soon in 5 mins.

So, a few days ago was the day to stop nursing to sleep and I was sooo nervous (I have a very strong willed toddler who has never fallen asleep without the boob, she will not even sleep in the car no matter how tired she is...think 8 month old on a 6 hour road trip). I explained to her that today is the day milk is going bye bye at night night time. She cried and screamed on and off for 40 mins then laid down and fell asleep. I was shocked! :O I was prepared for a three hour battle lol. The next night I explained to her the same thing and when I laid down next to her she whined and cried on and off for 5 mins and then lay down quietly next to me and fell asleep 20 mins later :O Miracle of miracles!!! Lol Then last night I laid her down and she didn't cry once, she stood up a few times, laid back down, wiggled and rolled around for along time, it took an hour for her to fall asleep.

So that is where I am up to right now. I still nurse her back to sleep when she wakes up and to sleep for naps so my plan is to continue what we are doing for this week and then I will tackle the early morning/night feeds with no more milk until the sun comes up/alarm goes off.

Wish me luck and I hope this encourages some of the other tired momma's on here that it is possible to night wean those boob obsessed toddlers of yours!
