Is this appropriate ?

Question

My husband and I were at my inlaws for family dinner yesterday and at one point my 2 month old baby girl needed to be changed. I took her into the spare room to be changed and my MIL follows me with my 18 month old nephew. She's like "come on Mikey, your cousin needs her diaper changed!". She then picks him up and puts him on the bed right next to her while I'm changing her. Like he was so close he was touching her feet. It was weird to me. I mean she went out of her way to bring him in there.
I'm not sure if that's just me? I mean when I was young I "helped" my aunt change my baby boy cousin's diaper once. And by help I mean I stood next the the change table and waited until she was done, but there was no one else around to watch me so I had to go with her. There was literally no reason for either of them to be in there other than to just sit and watch me change her... 😕 it's not like she came to chit chat she didn't even talk to me.

I don’t see what the big deal is. I change my 9 month old daughter in the middle of my parents or in-laws living room floor while we’re visiting  with family including my 4 year old nephew, grandparents, aunts/uncles, whoever is there. Doesn’t matter if it’s pee or poop. My son helps with her diaper changes regularly. Maybe I’m weird but during the warmer months I will change either of my children (9mo girl and 2.5yr boy) in the back of my hatchback SUV in the parking lot rather than use a public restroom and then literally anyone walking by can see them. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Idk, I guess I'm just weird, because I don't like changing my babies in front of people. Children included. Not because kids know the difference because they obviously don't, but I don't want them to be in the habit of having themselves exposed to people in general. Also, it gives them privacy. 
I dread changing babies in public restrooms because people always come up and are "all up in their junk." I hate the lack of privacy.

I dont think it's weird at all. At 18 months my daughter loved babies and her baby dolls and was really interested in them

If she had no reason to be there then yes, it is weird. Was she changing his diaper too? Being followed like that is definitely odd.

Its not weird another child that you know being in the same room as you change your daughter. I change my children in front of each other. The children don't know any difference. I do find it a little uncomfortable though that your MIL didn't even talk to you because it's as though she was watching and judging you and that's not right

I don’t see anything wrong with it. 18 months is a baby himself. Now if he’s was older and could talk and understand body parts that would be a bit different.

I change my daughter in private to try to teach her privacy and boundaries in terms of her own body. So in your situation I might've mentioned that to my MIL. It is kinda odd that she would follow you unless the 18 month old also needed changing or she wanted to help somehow? I don't think she meant any harm, but if it bothers you maybe next time just say "oh I just want to give my baby some privacy."
