When to pump?

My daughter is 10 days old and I am breast feeding. My husband would like to give her a bottle around 4 weeks. I will still breastfeeding but he wants to help me out. I'm confused on how pumping works. Do I start now and store up? Do I wait and pump the day he will feed her after a feeding? Help!

If you start pumping after every feeding it will tell your body that you need to make more milk. I wouldn't start stocking up on milk too soon unless you plan to freeze it. Your milk will be good 3-8 days refrigerated. It will last 6 months in the freezer but once you thaw the milk it has to be used in within 24 hours. The problem with using older milk like that is that your body is constantly changing and making milk that is good for your baby at that time.

I pumped one side while I fed on the other. Next meal I would switch sides.
