I'm an L&D nurse and checking for dilation is completely unnecessary at this point unless you think you're in labor. There are far less invasive ways to determine if your baby is head down, like simply feeling your belly. Cervical checks truly don't tell you anything at all until you are in labor and can cause some unwanted side effects like bleeding, increased cramping, potential for accidentally breaking your water, etc. I plan to decline unnecessary checks until closer to my due date.

I have my 36week appt this Thursday and I was told I will get the steep b test and have a cervical check.

I got one this week at 35 weeks because my doctor asked me if I wanted it based off contractions I was having. They have always asked me if I want it each time, even if they’re very confident that I’m not. Its quick and simple to do and if that eases my mind, they’re happy to oblige. This is my 4th pregnancy and basically a back to back pregnancy. So far it’s the same as all my others that were spaces apart. Each doctor is different and of want or don’t want something just tell them.

You’ll get your group b swab (vaginal swab) done at your 35/36 week appointment & most of the time you’ll get your cervix checked. However, this is performed in order to check to see baby’s positioning and see if they’re cephalic (head down) or breech as most babies should have turned head down by that point. 😊 They do check for dilation/thinning but it’s not a huge priority versus making sure they know how baby’s positioned.

Depends on the doctor. With my 1st & 2nd, that OB wouldnt check til 38+ weeks. And with my 3rd, they checked me at 36 weeks.
