Hernia?

Question

My son is 1 week 1 day old and I’m pretty concerned about his belly button, I’ve read on something called umbilical hernia and wanted other peoples options as to what they think or if they have had a baby with it? Just before I start stressing and freaking out!

I asked my pediatrician about my one month olds umbilical hernia today.  She said they’re pretty common and usually resolve on their own by the time the child is 2-3 years old.

My oldest had one, She’s now two. They are very common. Her doctor checked it each time we had a checkup. Hers is almost completely gone. The doctor had said they only worry if the color changes or it appears tender/painful when you touch it. Most doctors will do surgery if it’s there still after 3-4 years, but usually they repair them self’s. I completely understand your worry though. I was going crazy monitoring my daughters, but it never bothered her and it’s all healed up now.

My little guy is 6 weeks tomorrow and has one. I was worried so sent this picture to his doctor. She said if it doesn’t go away by age 5 (most do), then there will be a small surgery. She said not to worry unless it changes colors, gets hard, or causes him discomfort (all of which are really rare).

My oldest had it, they checked on it at her well child visits but it never bothered her. It was gone by the time she was three and it never caused her any pain!
