Sick toddler (extreme teething)

C 🖤

I posted yesterday about my 17mo son who's currently sick, and came to the conclusion it's probably strep. He is definitely teething too but he's never been this bad so I figured there was more to it. I took him to the doctor this morning and in the car on the way he started screaming and sobbing and I could see blood on his mouth so I pulled over quickly to check him and he had blood on his hand too, so I can only guess that he's poked his gum (one tooth in particular looks very bloody) and the excessive drool has spread it to look worse than it is. Anyways. The doctor took one look at him and said "yep, teething. It can make them cranky sometimes" which I obviously already fucking know because he has a mouth full of teeth but I also know my son and he's not just cranky, he's unwell. I voiced my concerns and told the doctor about his symptoms- mouth sores, refusing to eat, not wanting to drink much, sleeplessness (waking up screaming and inconsolable), insane amounts of drool, weird smelling breath and drool, slight cough, runny nose, very red cheeks and ears, slight fever, and a possibly unrelated hatred of his nappy/holding his nappy and crying often- and said that I know those things all sound like teething issues but I've never ever seen him this bad and I just feel like something else is up with him, but I was basically told that nothing could be done and to wait until he's stopped teething so badly and then go back if he's still unwell.

So. I'm giving him Calpol every 4 hours, teething granuels every 3 hours, and giving him cold foods like fruit and yogurt to help soothe his gums, but he's still not happy at all. He won't let me touch his mouth and is just really grumpy and tired. He hasn't laughed at all today which isn't him at all. Is there anything else I can be doing for him? Also has anyone seen teething this extreme or is my gut feeling that it's something more likely to be correct? I hate seeing him so miserable 😞
