How to avoid the metformin poops?

I took one metformin this morning and I’ve been pooping my brains out ever since. Has anyone had anything help with calming the side effects of metformin?

It takes some time for your body to get used to it but it will get better! I found cutting out sugars, fatty/greasy foods, and diary helped me. Play around with your diet bc you’ll find certain foods trigger tummy problems more than others. There’s also an extended release pill (I never tried it so I can’t speak from personal experience) that’s supposed to be better for the bathroom issues so if it doesn’t get better in a month or two ask your doctor about that.

I switched from taking it in the morning to taking it with dinner. That helped a lot (I’m guessing because it was being paired with more food?). My doctor also said if the side effects were too bothersome, to ask about the extended release pills because the side effects aren’t nearly as bad.

Agree with the other commenter, it doesn’t seem to be a consistent pattern with this stuff.
I get nausea rather than the runs and I’ve found mostly it’s because I’m not eating enough in a meal with it (perhaps the food needs to coat my stomach to avoid irritation). They also recommend you eat food immediately before and right after you take it (eg in between mouthfuls)
Keep track of what you’re eating and notice what makes it worse and adjust to suit.
If you’re just living on the toilet for weeks though consider heading back to your doc to either adjust your dose or talk about how you can manage side effects.
