Do I need a mattress pad for the bassinet part of this?

Got this for baby to sleep in, in our room for the first couple of months.. do I need to buy a mattress for the bassinet part? 
FTM. No idea what I’m doing. Lol

No, infants  should sleep on a hard surface.  But they do sell mattresses  that "fit"  but they aren't  made for them.

Not a pad, but I would get a couple of sheets - they make them just to fit pack and plays. We got two quilted style sheets that were plastic lined on the back. Worked great for when he would spit up or pee mid-change.

I put a fitted sheet made for the pack and play that as quilted. I just thought it felt so much softer for her. 😊

No you don’t need a mattress if you use the bottom part of the pack and play for baby to sleep in you might want to get a fitted sheet that they sell specially for pac and plays but a mattress definitely isn’t needed.

it doesnt come with like thick padded mattess, I layered a quilt blankie underneath

No the mattresses they try to sell for them aren't safe. If baby rolls over to the side they can slip in between the mesh and the mattress and suffocate.
