School for austitic kids?

My cousin is going to start aba (-pplird behavior analysis) school. They help austistic and other kids learn to behave in society. But they wont let my aunt see the school. They said its due to privacy issues. They won’t let her tour and see inside at all. Is that weird? Shes worried because she doesn’t even know how the classrooms look like. Is this normal and do these schools help? Please we really need more information on this and help.

I'm a Behavioral Health Professional working with Autistic children. And yes, this is very strange. I understand the privacy aspect of it, but we have many schools here that provide services for children with behavioral and developmental disabilities and the parents I work with have always been able to tour the schools, ask questions, etc. As Jennel said, many will do tours during after school hours due to the HIPPA, but to not allow tours at all is definitely strange. It's important for parents to get to know the teachers and learn as much as they can about the school and how the classrooms are set up.

No this is NOT normal. I worked as a program supervisor and lead therapist for a special needs school. We allowed tours all the time. Parents and guests signed a confidentiality agreement before the tour. I work as a child/family therapist now and a client attends another ABA school, which openly allowed me to tour. I would refuse to allow my child to attend a school that did not allow me to meet teachers and see the space.

When my daughter went, every child was known as initials. Example my child was always known as AAA. Also, I had to sign something that said I am not allowed to talk to anyone about if I saw a kid in the hallway for example.
There has to be a time when that school is empty when all the kids go home that someone could meet your aunt to do a tour. Like the school needs to accomedate that. -for example, my situation, I would NOT be sending my child into a school that I didn't see how it works, when she cannot communicate to me about it. Fuck no!
What happens, sometimes, is if a place KNOWS it's the only place that offers the service (for example, my city I'm only 1 aba therapy school. Same people run it for the whole province), so the people running this feels they can demand more from the people using the service because they are not trying to win the service. The parents choices are do how this place is, or not do the therapy. And, when you're an autism. Mom, you're not going to choose not doing the therapy.
So tell your aunt don't back down until she gets what she needs for her kid. It it doesn't feel ok, it's because it's not. Also tell her to make sure if she can not observe how the school works, to ask to speak with the people who woukd be working with the child.

It’s normal to not allow tours while other students are there as ABA is covered by insurance for some and therapists, BCaBA’s, & BCBA’s have to follow HIPPA protocol. However they should allow a tour after hours or before classes start. My therapy center doesn’t allow tours during therapy hours & when we do evaluations we have to do it in a room separate from our clients.

I don't know of that's normal. I teach kindergarten and I have never heard of a program or school that specializes in special needs excluding parents like that. Usually these programs integrate the parents to help keep consistency so children progress faster. I would never send my child anywhere I couldn't walk through/see for myself. Call me paranoid or overprotective but that sounds sketchy to me.
