What can the ER do if u are miscarrying?

So I know people say if u have red bleeding, go to the ER. But at this point there is nothing they can do right? So why go to the ER.
 I would rather lose the baby in the privacy of my own home and cry and scream as much as I want, no lie in a hospital bed with strangers. I just don't understand why you would go to the ER

My sister mc at 12 weeks, i woke up early morning to her screams in the bathroom, all i could see was blood she passed out from the pain, she was hemorrhaging i called 911 if she hadn't been to the hospital she would have lost her life, they also preformed a d n c because her body wouldn't pass the baby, there are many reasons to see a doctor durring a mc, to ensure your safety

They can do blood work to check your levels. They can also send you for an ultrasound to see what is going on. I thought i was having a miscarriage with my son. They were able to run tests and assured me that my baby was ok. But early on, they can't really do anything to stop a miscarriage.

They can make sure it's not in your tubes also , that can be dangerous in some cases and needs to be checked out

It's very important to get checked out if you're having a lot of bleeding and cramping. The ER can't do anything to prevent a miscarriage. But, if you're bleeding and cramping and you haven't had an ultrasound yet to confirm the location of your pregnancy, you could be having an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy, which can be life threatening for mom in some circumstances, and which the ER can find on US and get you the treatment you need.
I'm an emergency medicine physician, so I've cared for women going through ectopic pregnancies before. Every day at work I have to tell some woman/couple that they've lost their pregnancy. It's sad every time.  My best friend and my sister both miscarried last year. I'm 6w5d with my first pregnancy and I worry about losing it every day.

i can tell you from experience the pros and cons:
my 1st miscarriage (8w) i had no idea what was happening. i assumed it was a mc but what if it was ectopic? what if there were twins and i was only losing 1? the pain was INCREDIBLE. i couldnt take medicine bc i didnt know if i was still pregnant. i was passing out, my husband was scared so we called 911. when i arrived, i had already passed the baby. but my body was writhing in pain, and i was shaking because my body was in shock. they were able to give me pain killers in an IV and a warming blanket - and i felt 1000x better.

the 2nd time i was only 6 weeks so although the pain was terrible, it wasnt as bad. my husband and i agreed we wouldnt call 911 this time. but, because i knew what was happening, i took an old percocet from when i had my teeth pulled and was able to make it through on my own.

im not saying all this to scare you, odds are you wont go through this - but there are situations where you may feel safer at a hospital.

I had a blighted ovum and did not miscarry until 10 weeks. I thought I would be able to do it at home, but there was literally so much blood coming at once that I passed out in the bathroom and hit my head on the sink counter.

Thank God DH was near and heard the thump and came running. We called the ambulance and they came and checked me and my blood pressure was extremely low. When EMS saw me, they said, "Umm...we're taking you," because I was turning gray.

They couldn't stop what was happening, but they took great care of me. I got fluids and the doctor basically "cleaned out" the rest of what was still left.

They can't do anything to stop the miscarriage, but if you've had recurrent miscarriages, or unfortunately ending having more than one...it is important to have them medically documented.

Most insurance companies will cover extensive fertility tests after 3 documented miscarriages

Sometimes you can have a normal periods whole pregnant sometimes you could have multiples and only lose one (i went through that with my son) and sometimes you can get an infected or it might not all come out and you have to have a d&c done. It all depends.

I agree with you, Katie.  I've always just called my midwife and she has told me what warning signs mean I should go to the ED.  Then I go in for bloodwork and a check, but have miscarried at home.
