To Amnio or not to Amnio?

I’m 39 and pregnant with my first. I’m just wondering if anyone has had an amniocentesis or is thinking about getting one? I’m on the fence but with my age I just want to make sure everything is ok with my baby.

I asked for a less invasive test to my dr, he advised me to do blood genetic testing instead, the test came back fine so an amnio wasn't necessary, with that test I also found out the baby sex. I got it done at 10 weeks! It takes a 7 to 10 days to get the results!

I did the NIPTS, but that just tells you risk assessment. Whereas amniotic and cvs are diagnostic tests.

I had the NIPT at 11 weeks and the quad screen a bit later. Both came back low risk, so no amnio (I’m 39 yo and at 30 weeks with my first). I wouldn’t jump to amnio unless your doctor recommends.

I had NIPT at 12 weeks which came back high risk for T13. This was confirmed by diagnostic CVS . Honestly, after all the heartache I’m leaning towards direct diagnostic testing this time - I’m now 38 and pregnant again-  but everyone handles it differently.

Depending on how far along you are, you can have blood tests to determine if there is a need for an amnio. I am 36 this pregnancy and had the NIPS test early on in the first trimester and also an AFP test in the second trimester. Both came back low risk/negative. I also had ultrasound screenings to confirm there were no abnormalities; although I hear the blood tests are most accurate. 
I would say, ask for the blood tests and then if there is any concern from them you and your doctor can make the decision regarding amniocentesis or other further testing. Good luck!

Do NIPT first, then if you need amnio you can get it after. It carries a risk of miscarriage, so my doctor said she didn’t want me to do it if I didn’t need to. This was after two consecutive miscarriages.

We did NIPT. I wouldn’t have done amnio, especially since we wouldn’t have changed our plans if there were any abnormalities. Most doctors try to avoid it nowadays; hopefully you won’t need to worry about it.
