People say they’re not designed for early detection but I did get a positive at about 9 dpo with one of my pregnancies. I did however, have strong enough symptoms that indicated that hcg was likely detectable. 
It’s kind of a crap shoot. Some people can use them for early testing, others cannot. Each pregnancy is different too. Hcg rises at different levels for different people. 
I think it’s definitely worth a shot since they’re only $1.

Like others said it just depends. With my son I got a faint positive on 11DPO on a dollar store test. It was so, so faint but there. My beta the same day was 23. So I would say the dollar store tests have a sensitivity around 25miu. 
A lady I know didn't get her first faint positive till 15DPO which is after her period was due. 
It depends on when implantation happens and how fast hCG doubles. The "average" doubling time early on is 48 hours but with my son my doubling time was 25 hours. So it can be faster, or slower, hence 48 being the average.

Depends how early and how much HCG you produce. They aren’t as sensitive as an early response (4-6 days before your missed period) test so they’re best used once you’ve missed your period
