Red to purple!?

So I’ve had red hair forever. Since I was about 21/22 probably? I’ve dyed it black and bleached the front out of the years but have always gone back to red. But now I’m thinking about going back to my first “weird” color which was purple. Anyone have any advice about going red to purple? Can I expect that the purple will just go over the red since I haven’t colored it in a couple of months? Should I go to a salon and have them do it? Should I attempt bleaching the red out first? I have so many questions! Lol
