How did you introduce your newborn to your dogs?

I'm going to have hubs bring a blanket home from the hospital that baby's been wrapped in so he can get used to the smell of baby. Then I will have hubs help when we get home because I will be recovering from surgery and don't want pup to get excited and try jumping up but I'll have him come over and smell baby that I hold while hubs stands or sits kind of between me me/baby and dog

From what I've read and the vets recommendation, it is good to teach your dog respect for the baby first, before letting the dog get close. I been talking to my dog about her little brother, I point to my belly, let her hear the heart and cuddle with my belly. She also knows to behave and be calm when we are getting things ready in the baby's room. I know she loves kids, and I been putting her in situations with more kids lately, teaching her to be patient and respectful. That will all continue once the baby gets home, I will teach her to be calm and respectful until the baby has age to play with her. I imagine all dogs know that something is coming, specially because they can feel the changes on your body and routine, but it's good to talk to them and ease them in to the big transition, specially if it the first baby.

I started by setting the baby down next to me and calling the dogs over.  They were very curious.  I kept my body mostly in front of the baby so that if the dogs got anxious I could calm them and keep baby safe.  My dogs love babies and know where to go if they need alone time.  I have a 7 & 8 year old and having my baby in November.  They keep investigating the new baby stuff also.  Hope this helps a little.

This is something we're nervous about! We have a 1 1/2year old lab. He's so super sweet, but I think he forgets his size at times. We will be doing to blanket thing that people have suggested and I've also read that it can be good to carry around a baby doll wrapped in a blanket so they get use to you having something in your arms and won't jump out of curiosity. I think that's probably more important if you have a larger breed
