SI Joint Dysfunction??

Question

Has anyone had any problems with SI Joint Dysfunction? I have it really bad right now. I'm only 19 weeks and I can barely walk sometimes and I absolutely cannot lay on my back at all. I know there's really nothing I can do. Can't take any meds, can't get X-rays. Did you find any relief? Did it continue after the birth?

Try a chiropractor. I get adjusted every week and it helps a lot. You can also get a prenatal massage, and try to use a pregnancy pillow when you sleep to keep your hips aligned.

Talk to your regular doctor about sending you to physical therapy. Until we moved I was a PT tech and we had many pregnant women coming in starting around 4-5 months along usually with different issues. The therapists give you some light stretches and excercise to do and depending on how bad your pain is they will massage the area afterwards. Within a few sessions most of the women had improvement in the pain, and when you're done they'll give you some exercises and stretches to continue doing at home so the problem doesn't come back.

I am a physical therapist and we treat SI dysfunction all the time. I highly recommend you see a therapist. They can fix it,  teach you exercises to prevent it in the future and teach you how to self treat, will probably only take 3-4 visits.

I have it and did before the pregnancy, because my lumbar spine is fused from a car crash 3 years ago. Before the pregnancy I was doing physical therapy, massage, chiro once a week and steroid injections under anesthesia every 3 months. Now I'm down to just massage and chiro, but I have to add physical therapy back in very soon with my pain getting worse. They encouraged work on my psoas muscle, piriformis muscles in my butt and core strengthening. It was always challenging with my fusion and refusal of pain meds, but I was much better off doing it. I struggle to walk right now and I'm terrified of how bad the pain will be as I get bigger in the 3rd trimester.

I also have SI joint issues. My best friend is a physical therapist. She showed me some stretches and sent me some videos from YouTube. I feel like the foam roller helps the most. I position the roller horizontally across my butt and place it where my si joints sit with my feet flat on the floor and knees bent. I keep my legs wide. Drop one knee out and hold it for a minute then repeat with the other knee. This opens up your hips and hurts but I just breath through it. The next thing I do is go into a figure 4 position (still with the foam roller under me) by putting right foot against left leg and repeat with other foot. This gives a good stretch in my lower back as well as my IT band. I find almost immediate relief most of the time but sometimes it takes a couple days to start feeling better. It's hard to explain everything that I do so my suggestion is looking up videos on YouTube. Good luck! I hope you get to feeling better soon!
