Trust your instincts mamas! UPDATED 3/20
Sunday morning at 3:30 am my baby was getting really fussy. She was only 11 days old, but she always is really content. She only cries if she’s hungry, or uncomfortable. All morning she was crying and felt warm. We checked her temperature and there was a slight fever. We took her to urgent care at 11am. They checked temperature rectally and it was fine. They told us everything is fine with baby and to go home. 2pm her eye starts to swell.
We thought maybe it had to do with her clogged tear ducts. We kept monitoring her fever. I really was discouraged from going back in to get her checked, because they would probably just send us home. Her eye was getting worse though. You could tell she was in pain because even when sleeping she was whimpering. My mom came over to help me with her so I could get some work done. My mom said I needed to take her to the ER because something was wrong with her. (My mom has never been one to suggest going to ER or urgent care unless it’s absolutely necessary.) so we went. They told us it’s just a clogged tear duct. I asked why she was in so much pain and crying. The doctor told us, “she’s a newborn baby. They change patterns every few days. They’re going to cry.” Well I went home feeling incredibly stupid for going to the doctor twice in a day to just be sent home.
That might my MIL came to help us so we could catch up on sleep. 2am she comes in the room saying the babies mouth is covered in blood! She continued to drool blood all morning. Her eye had swollen up more.
I called the pediatrician as soon as they opened. They called back around 10am and got us in at 10:50. Her temperature was at 102. They sent us straight to the ER so they could start doing labs to test for infections.
She’s had lots of blood work done, urine tests, a spinal tap, CT scan and has an MRI first thing in the morning. There’s an infection in her eye and blood, we will get result of what the infection is exactly in the morning. She will be in the hospital for 2 weeks at least.
WE WERE TURNED AWAY TWICE. It’s so frustrating that the doctors just shrugged us off as new parents worrying about nothing. We know our baby and we knew that she was in pain.
The swelling is definitely going down on her eye now, it’s still red and irritated. I just can’t wait for my little girl to be back to happy and healthy again.
UPDATE
I feel like she is doing a lot better. They have diagnosed her with MRSA (staph) in the eye and blood. They are going to do a surgery in the morning where they make an incision in the eye and try and drain the abscess behind it. We will be in the hospital for 4-6 weeks.
She’s 2 weeks old today and already has tons of fight in her.
