Risk a friendship or forget the guy?

So, I’m in school and I have met a group of new girl friends. We are all developing a friendship together.

One of the girls is a relationship type of girl and I’m enjoying the single life meeting guys. She gave this really attractive guy her number. (We have same type, in terms of guy preference. I saw the guy first, but she gave him her number first on the same day.) The most they did was text and they stopped talking. He basically told her he wants to be single, and he’s not rushing into a relationship.

Months pass and I forget about him, then I see him volunteering in the same place as me. We start talking casually as we volunteer and he drops some compliments. However, I never take it further. I later add him on ig and he adds me back immediately and likes my pics. I’m wondering if I should see if there’s something there with him. Should I tell my friend before I talk to him, after something develops with him, or leave the situation alone?
