Historian here. Are you looking for anything specific? You mentioned the Korean War and the Berlin Wall. Are you mostly interested in histories of American conflicts&war? Or modern world history in general? 
Here are some of my favorites:

'Make Room for TV: television and the family ideal in postwar America' by Lynn Spigel

'Roosevelt's Lost Alliances: how personal politics helped start the Cold War' by Frank Costigliola

'Coming of Age in Mississippi: the classic autobiography of a young black girl in the rural south' by Anne Moody

'The Things They Carried' by Tim O'Brien. A fictional, yet truthful reflection of the Vietnam War.

'The Limits of Power: the End of American Exceptionalism' by Andrew J. Bracevich

Anything by Mary Roach- She takes a specific topic of scientific inquiry and delves into all aspects of it including the history.
'Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex' 
'Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers' 
'Stiff: Science Tackles the Afterlife'
Etc.

If you don't mind biographies in that category, I just read and really enjoyed "Manchu Princess, Japanese Spy: The Story of Kawashima Yoshiko the Cross-Dressing Spy Who Commanded Her Own Army" by Phyllis Birnbaum. The title is mostly self-explanatory -- and the author does a good job of explaining the background and at least general details of the second Sino-Japanese war and its relation to WWII.
