What all do I need to know?

I’m wanting to use cloth diapers come August when my little one is born to save money and I’m gonna be home with him all day. Which brands are the best an has the best absorbency?

I bought 24 osocozy prefolds and it’s not that I don’t like them, but I actually really prefer flats! Flats are the most economical and easiest to clean option. I love folding them on him and experimenting with the fit. My favorite fold can even be done ahead of time so all I have to do is put it on him, just like a disposable! You just have to pair them with a waterproof cover. I used flour sack towels from target (4 for $4) at first, then I ordered osocozy flats, but my favorite has been green mountain diapers’ muslin flat. Sooooo soft and absorbent. I prefer their prefolds also, I wish I had bought them instead of the osocozy. My mama koala pockets are soft and so cute also, but I usually only use them out of the house for convenience, at home I don’t mind the extra few steps to get a flat and cover on my baby.

If your main goal is to save money, I would go with flats & covers. You can cloth diaper for about $100 total wit that method.  Flats are nice because they fit from birth to potty training and cam be customized to your baby.  
There are also some good pocket choices that are cheap.  There are websites that sell them individually like happy beehinds and fluffy penguin. They sell various brands for about $5 each. You will also need to get some type of absorbency for them.  Flour sack towels are cheap and work well to stuff inside pockets.
Elemental joy are a newer line of pockets from the company that makes bum genius.  They come in a pack of 6 for $35 or so, but come with cotton flats as inserts which is a big upgrade over the microfiber that comes in most. They don’t have a big variety of prints though, so if you are interested in choosing your own fun prints, I would go with the above.
We like Alva for cheap pockets and like Nickis diapers brand covers as well as thirsties.  Green mountain diapers is great for flats/prefolds.  We also like the fluffy penguin bamboo & bamboo/cotton inserts and the thirsties hemp inserts for nighttime
