Breast pump in hospital bag?

Yes or no? I know the goal is to establish the latch but if for some reason that doesn’t work would it be smart to bring a pump so you could feed baby breast milk?

Naw. They bring in a machine if need be and provide you with new tubing, shields, etc that you can take home with you! It’s awesome.

My hospital said not to bring one because they will provide one if necessary. Find out if that’s the case with your hospital, if not then I would bring a hand pump one.

I’d definitely say no. We were told not to bring one as part of establishing breastfeeding means not using a bottle for at least several weeks. You will probably be able to feed just fine and you should get help. If you really can’t then you can hand express (which is the best way to express anyway) or they will have pumps there. You don’t actually produce milk anyway until a while after birth, you produce colostrum instead. A newborn has a very tiny stomach so they only need very tiny amounts at each feed :)

The hospital I work at charges for the kit to use for the breast pump. So I plan on bringing mine from home to avoid getting that extra charge.

I’d leave it at home. This is my 3rd and I brought the pump with for the first 2 and never even touched it. Lactation was lovely to work with and when I was struggling, they helped show me how to hand express. The nurse then caught the few drops in a spoon and we gave the baby the colostrum that way as we were both getting so frustrated at that point we needed to reset. It wouldn’t have been enough volume to even matter in a pump.

They will have one if you choose not to but they can also help educate you on your specific pump if you do. It’s really up to you.
