Banning mugshots
NYS has banned the release of mugshots over the weekend. They may be able to release mug shots from time to time when it serves a law enforcement purpose. Example: when searching for a wanted person. Apparently they did so because there are mugshot websites that charge the people money in order to remove their photo. (Some states have tried preventing this, but it didn’t work for some reason - not sure on the details)
Arguments I’ve heard from both sides:
Pros: 1) people in mugshots may have been arrested, but not charged or proven guilty yet so it can hurt their reputation. (People are innocent until proven guilty)
Cons: 1) when people recognize a person in a mugshot, they will call police and give info that may help solve a crime
2) if a person is arrested for a violent crime, it’s nice to see there face and know to avoid them for your own protection
What pros and cons can you think of? Overall, do you agree or disagree with banging mugshots?
