You could also get an lh surge before your period so it could pick that up and give you a false negative

I had a positive OPK right before my period several times and was not pregnant any of those times. 
hcg that turns HPT positive will bind with proteins on OPK and show a positive. HPT are more sensitive than OPK so they won’t tell you any faster. 
Many women have cycles where they get LH surge and will show positive OPK just before and during their period, so it’s not worth the confusion.
