If i had sex with someone and it resulted in a pregnancy i chose to keep, with them bowing out, their name would be nowhere near the child. I would give the child my last name, keep the birth certificate “father” portion blank, but i would be open to discussing an adoption once my spouse (not just a boyfriend) asked about it and made his desire to adopt the baby known. After that, if i chose to alter the baby’s last name and make it my spouse’s, i could do so with a clear conscience. I strongly prefer for my kids to have the same last name as me.

But if you’re with someone new, don’t put his name as the father on the birth certificate if you know he’s not actually the father. My neighbor did that and her ex took her to court and charged her with a felony for lying on a government form and he won. Even though he barely has anything to do with their child. Just wanted to throw that out there.

My dad was not in the picture and I’m so happy my mom gave me her name, not his. 
Also, I’m a high school teacher and we do a unit on names for the novel “The Namesake” it’s crazy how many of my students hate their last name because it’s their dad’s and their dad isn’t around.

Okay, so I was married when my so. Was concieved. Hubby and I split up after he shoved me into the wall, hard while I was sleeping, because "he could hear my brother and SIL having sex, and was mad that I wouldn't have sex with him." He never checked on the baby, never asked, and was even accusing me of conceiving my son with someone else (he was the one cheating, got a girl pregnant that same week we found out I was pregnant). My last name was still his last name when my son was born, so I gave my son my maiden name. 
 10/10 would do it again.

In that case, baby would have my last name. Dad would have to sign rights away for a new spouse to be able to adopt the baby and then change last name. It’s a whole legal process, so baby shouldn’t have a new spouse’s last name just because, because dad could end up fighting it and making a whole mess of the situation.
